The whole area is recognized and protected by the Japanese Agency of Cultural Affairs as an “Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings." <Details> The “Ine Bay Boat Tour” is a perfect opportunity to explore Ine Bay, which recently became a sister bay of France’s Mont-Saint-Michelle, in just 25 minutes. Passengers will be able to enjoy the beautiful Funaya fishing village of Ine. Ine Bay, together with nearby Miyazu-Bay, is a member of the “Club of the Most Beautiful Bays of the World” and its scenic views and rich ecosystems are highly regarded internationally. Ine, sometimes referred to as Japan’s most scenic village, or Japan’s Venice, is best known for its iconic Funaya houses, which has been supporting people’s lives in Ine since ancient times. Funaya houses is known for their unique structure; the ground level of the building is a garage for fishboats, and the second floor is used as housing and living space. About 230 of these unique Funaya houses stretch and covers over 5km of the coastline, creating a scenery that could only be found in Ine and for its preciousness, the whole area is recognized and protected by the Japanese Agency of Cultural Affairs as an “Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings." Alight at Stop “Hirata” – 4 minutes’ walk from bus stop A Sake Brewery founded in 1754, Mukai Sake Brewery is located within the Funaya district. Its specialty sake “Ine Mankai” is brewed from ancient red rice and is perfect for souvenirs. “Ine Mankai” is a sake that is highly sought after; Michelin Stared Restaurants “Noma (Denmark)” and “The Jane (Belgium)” are amongst the brewery’s trading partners. The brewery’s traditional brewing house is a must see, and the shop inside has a vast selection of quality sake for customers to choose from. The local tourist association’s “Machiaruki (City walk) Guide Tour” includes a visit to the brewery. • Hiratasan, Kaizouji (Temple) Tankai Bus – Board at “Inewan Meguri / Hide” and ride for 3 minutes. Alight at Stop “Hirata” – 2 minutes’ walk from bus stop The temple is known for its great location: As the temple is located on a hill near by the district, visitors can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the whole historic district. The temple is also well known for its cherry blossoms, and many visitors take photographs of the cherry blossoms and funaya houses in one shot during the season. • Ineura Park Tankai Bus – Board at “Inewan Meguri / Hide” and ride for 4 minutes. Alight at Stop “Ine” – 1-minute walk from bus stop The park is a great place to look at the Funaya houses much closer, and to rest your body. • Café “Miyabi” Tankai Bus – Board at “Inewan Meguri / Hide” and ride for 4 minutes. Alight at Stop “Ine” – 4-minutes’ walk from bus stop A former Funaya that has been renovated as a café. Visitors can enjoy and relax with the marvelous ocean view. • Michi no Eki (Roadside Station) “Funaya no Sato” Tankai Bus – Board at “Inewan Meguri / Hide” and ride for 6 minutes. Alight at Stop “Funaya no Sato Koen-Mae” A roadside station built on a hill that commands a view of the whole Ine Bay and Wakasa Bay, which is famous nationally as good natural port. Of course, the Funaya district could also be seen from here. The station has a restaurant adjoined. • Funaya Biyori Tankai Bus – Board at “Inewan Meguri / Hide” and ride for 4 minutes. Alight at Stop “Ine” – 8-minutes’ walk from bus stop A seaside café where visitors can spend a luxurious time. Ceremonial ships used during the village festivals are stored here as well, and they depart from this café. The second floor is a sushi restaurant, where you can enjoy the local produce. • Urashima Jinja (Shrine) • Tankai Bus – Board at “Inewan Meguri / Hide” and ride for 24 minutes. Alight at Stop “Urashima Jinja-Mae” – 5-minutes’ walk from bus stop Legend says that Urashima Taro (Or Urashima-ko), the protagonist of a Japanese folk fairy tale, is enshrined in this Shinto shrine. Ine is known to be where the tale originated, and descriptions could be found in the “Nihon Shoki”, one of Japan’s oldest historical texts. The history of the shrine is exceptionally old as well and is known to be founded at least by 825A.C., with Urashima-ko as its main god. The main building of the shrine is built facing the polar star, exemplifying ancient people’s belief in stars and its mythical powers. • Nunobiki Falls Tankai Bus – Board at “Inewan Meguri / Hide” and ride for 23 minutes. Alight at Stop “Urashima Jinja-Mae” – 8-minutes’ walk from bus stop Located on the foot of Unryu-San (Mountain / 358m), the 100m drop waterfall is an absolute beauty. The legend of Urashima Taro in this region tells that Urashima-ko (Urashima Taro) departed from a nearby village to fish in a small boat. The waterfall can only be seen after rains or during spring snowmelt seasons, which adds to the magic of this scene.
