A regular line to the isolated islands which connects Haboro Port (Haboro-cho, Tomamae-gun, Hokkaido Prefecture) and Teuri Island (Haboro-cho, Tomamae-gun, Hokkaido Prefecture) via Yagishiri Island (Haboro-cho, Tomamae-gun, Hokkaido Prefecture) in 1 hour and 35 minutes by car ferry, and in 60 minutes by high-speed passenger ship.

[Features]
Car ferry ‘Ororon 2’ which carries up to 300 passengers and 14 passenger vehicles is operated throughout the year. High-speed passenger ship ‘Sunliner 2’ which carries up to 130 passengers is operated during the Golden Week holiday period and from June through August.

All ferries are equipped with Wi-Fi onboard and ‘Sunliner 2’ offers barrier-free environment, providing a comfortable voyage for all passengers. Onboard, passengers get a view of two islands (Yagishiri Island and Teuri Island) side-by-side. On the afternoon ferry ride, passengers can enjoy the view of a beautiful sunset on the Japan Sea.

As the only means of transportation to Yagishiri Island and Teuri Island, this route has been supporting the life of the islanders for approximately 80 years.

Yagishiri Island (Yagishiri Port)

Yagishiri Island is located on the Japan Sea, 25km off the coast of Haboro Port, Northwest of Hokkaido Prefecture. It is a hilly island measuring 10.6km in circumference, stretching from east to west.

About one-third of the island is forested, consisting of approximately 150,000 trees from 50 species, including Japanese oak (Quercus crispula blume / Quercus mongolica var. crispula), yellow-paint maple (Acer pictum), Japanese rowan (Sorbus commixta), and a primeval forest of Japanese yew (Taxus cuspidata). The ‘Natural Forest of Yagishiri’ is designated as a natural monument.

Yagishiri Island is a small island, filled with blossoming alpine plants and wild grasses and flowers. Visitors can enjoy the serene, pastoral scenery of waterfowls migrating through the sky and sheep grazing in the plains.

Bicycle rental is recommended to get around the island.

Outdoor activities: Enjoy activities in the nature such as walks through the primeval forest; bird-watching; forest bathing; camping; scuba diving; sea kayaking; and fishing.

‘Onko-no-sou’ Forest: Accessible from Yagishiri Port in about 28 minutes by car or about 59 minutes by foot. / One of the greatest primeval forests of the Japanese yew (‘Onko’) in Japan, consisting of 50,000 yew trees.

Sheep ranch: Accessible from Yagishiri Port in about 7 minutes by car, and about 28 minutes by foot. / Visitors can feel like being in Scotland, watching the flock of Suffolk sheep grazing amid the ocean breeze.

Yagishiri Folk Museum: Accessible from Yagishiri Port in about 7 minutes by foot. / A western-style architecture built in 1900 (the 33th year of the Meiji era). It exhibits precious cultural properties which pass down the footsteps of the forefathers to the following generations.

Teuri Island (Teuri Port)
 
Teuri Island is located on the Japan Sea, 28km off the coast of Haboro Port, Northwest of Hokkaido Prefecture. It measures 11.6km in circumference, stretching from north to west.

This island is the world’s pre-eminent breeding site for seabirds. Rare species of seabird such as spectacled guillemot (Cepphus carbo), ancient murrelet (Synthliboramphus antiquus), common guillemot (Uria aalge, or ‘Ororon bird’), and rhinoceros auklet (Cerorhinca monocerata) build their nesting sites on the sheer cliff on the west coast of the island. Visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of the various seabirds flying under the giant sky from spring to early summer.

Visitors can also enjoy delicious seafood, especially the exquisite sea urchin.

Bicycle or motorbike rental is recommended to get around the island.

Akaiwa and Akaiwa Observatory: Accessible from Teuri Port in about 13 minutes by car, and about 1 hour and 11 minutes by foot. / Akaiwa is a rock with a sharp arrow-head shape, vertically protruding from the sea at a height of 48 meters above sea level. It is the symbol of Teuri Island. Surrounding the rock, the Akaiwa Observatory is the observation site for seabirds. Visitors can see threatened species such as common guillemot (Uria aalge, or ‘Ororon bird’) and rhinoceros auklet (Cerorhinca monocerata) flying around, as well as a large number of their nests.

<By train> From Rumoi Station of Rumoi-Honsen of the JR Hokkaido Line: Take the Engan Bus, Toyotomi-Rumoi Line, from ‘Rumoi Eki-mae’ stop, bound for Toyotomi. Get off at ‘Honsha Terminal’ stop and walk for about 13 minutes.

<By bus> Take the Engan Bus ‘Hoboro Express’ from ‘Sapporo Eki-mae Terminal’ (Gate 11 of central lane). Get off at ‘Honsha Terminal’ stop and transfer to Engan Bus ‘Haboro Port Transport’. Get off at ‘Haboro Ferry Terminal’ and walk 1 minute.
